Alberto Contador ambitious for the Worlds Time Trial win
Alberto Contador of Team Saxo Bank-Tinkoff Bank and Jonathan Castroviejo of Team Movistar rode the World Championships time trial course to get the right shape ahead of the race.
The Spaniard told Biciciclismo that the track is lot easier than he anticipated which he does not see as an advantage for himself.
He briefed that, on the internet it appears as quite a difficult course with several climbs and turns but out of the three climbs he is only familiar with Cauberg, which is quite tricky.
"I had hoped that the first one [Sint Remigiusstraat, 1000m reportedly at 7.7 per cent gradient - ed.] would be hard, but it's actually not that bad,” Alberto hinted.
“They're not a climber's hills where you'd have to go out of the saddle. They can be ridden remaining seated, which is why they're not so much to my advantage".
"The road surface is a bit rough in the first part, so it advantages riders that are a little heavier than me”.
“I quite like the second part, though. We'll see if there's any wind because there are some unprotected stretches," he concluded.
After missing most of the season because of suspension, Contador has shown great strength since his return to professional cycling at the Eneco Tour 2012.
The cyclist missed the Tour de France, Giro d’ Italia and the 2012 Olympic Games but has shown tremendous legs right through his debut race of the season.
He secured the fourth overall position at the Eneco Tour after his superb performance and fine tuned his form ahead of the Vuelta a Espana.
Contador claimed the first overall spot at the Spanish Grand Tour just ahead of the Road World Championships and is definitely a pre-race favourite to claim an overall victory at the coming race.
The 29-year-old is being realistic and cited that winning a Grand Tour and the Worlds are two totally opposite races and occupying the top podium position will not be an easy task.
Some of the favourites before the Wednesday race include, Peter Sagan, Andre Greipel, Matthew Harley Goss, Mark Cavendish and Edvald Boasson Hagen.
