Alberto Contador continued maintaining his second overall spot at the Vuelta a Espana
Alberto Contador of Team Saxo Bank-Tinkoff Bank returned to professional cycling at the Eneco Tour and the cyclist is currently working his way up the overall classifications at the Vuelta a Espana 2012.
He managed to achieve the fourth overall position at the Eneco Tour and fine-tuned his form for the Spanish Grand Tour.
The Spaniard currently holds the second overall position after the Vuelta a Espana stage 16 overall classifications and is working pretty hard to secure the top spot.
He faced a two-year suspension earlier on this year as a result of his positive blood samples at the Tour de France 2010.
The judges ruled the case against Contador and also disqualified him from all the victories since the 2010 edition of the French Grand race.
The 29-year-old has missed all the important cycling events of the season and the Vuelta a Espana is his only opportunity to register a big before going to the UCI Road World Championships.
Alberto is trying really hard to cut down the deficit on Joaquim Rodriguez Oliver who is leading the overall classifications.
He noted after the stage 16 of the race, “I couldn’t shake off Joaquim, but I am very happy with my performance and that of my team”.
“Sometimes you win and other times you don’t, but there is still a week to go and we’ve still got to climb the Bola del Mundo,” said the 2008 champion.
“I had better legs today and I tried. But a rainy day would suit me better. We’ve been having lots of good weather with lots of sun. The rain could be my ally”.
Joaquim Rodriguez Oliver has his own reasons to bag an overall victory after he was denied of a win at the Giro d’Italia this year and had to settle for the second overall position.
He is leading the stage 16 classifications with a total lead of 28 seconds on Alberto Contador after the stage 16 overall classifications.
Alejandro Valverde, Christopher Froome and Daniel Moreno Fernandez occupy the third, fourth and fifth positions in the respective order.
It will be interesting to see, if Contador manages to overcome his compatriot to register an overall victory at the ongoing Vuelta a Espana 2012.
