Alberto Contador to end his 2012 campaign after the Giro di Lombardia 2012
After marking a successful return at the Eneco Tour and the Vuelta a Espana, Alberto Contador’s performance at the UCI Road World Championships was disappointing.
The cyclist has now decided to end his 2012 crusade at the Giro di Lombardia scheduled on September 29, 2012.
Contador made an appearance at the Eneco Tour to find the right form for the third and the last Grand Tour race of the season, the Vuelta a Espana 2012.
The cyclist rode slowly but surely and managed to claim the fourth overall position at the Eneco Tour 2012 after the final general classifications.
He succeeded during the 17th stage of the Vuelta and make full use of his tremendous form to grab an overall victory at the Spanish Grand Tour.
It was his second overall victory at the Vuelta and his fifth overall Grand Tour including two Tour de France (2007, 2009) and one Giro d’Italia (2008).
“I put myself under so much pressure that right now I feel as if I was set free,” Contador said after the Vuelta  victory.
“I’m very pleased both for myself and for the people who are thanking me for this spectacle, when in fact it’s me that should be thanking them”.
“One thing is clear: winning gives you more confidence and it drives you to win again. If not, you’ve always got that niggling doubt,” he concluded.
It was announced earlier that the Spaniard will also test his legs at the Giro del Piemonte before lining up for the ‘the race of falling leaves’ and will ride the Milan-Turin to ensure his peak form for the final Grand Tour race in Europe.
Team Saxo Bank-Tinkoff Bank final roster for the remaining part of the season is as under,
Milan-Turin (September 26): Alberto Contador, Manuele Boaro, Anders Lund, Rafal Majka, Mads Christensen, Bruno Pires, Chris Sorensen and Matteo Tosatto.
Giro del Piemonte (September 27): Manuele Boaro, Mads Christensen, Anders Lund, Rafal Majka, Bruno Pires, Nicki Sorensen, Matteo Tosatto and Troels Vinther.
Giro di Lombardia (September 29): Alberto Contador, Manuele Boaro, Rafal Majka, Sérgio Paulinho, Bruno Pires, Chris Sorensen, Nicki Sorensen and Matteo Tosatto.
