Alberto Contador took his second victory at the Tour de San Luis 2012
Alberto Contador of Team Saxo Bank claimed his second stage victory at the Tour de San Luis. He was the quickest during the 160.6 kilometre mountain top stage 5 of the race.
Contador was accompanied by Levi Leipheimer and Daniel Diaz during the final kilometre of the stage but the Spaniard had enough legs to claim the win.
He briefed after the victory, "I'm very happy, if at the beginning of the race you would have told me that I will win two stages I would not have believed".
Alberto finished the race in 4 hours, 19 minutes and 59 seconds and defeated the local hero, Daniel Diaz for the top position.
Daniel of Team San Luis Somos Todos was 2 seconds behind Contador at the second position while Levi Leipheimer of Team Omega Pharma-Quick Step claimed the third spot.
Leipheimer admired Contador’s performance and briefed that the Spaniard was very quick and attacked the stage early on.
Levi himself was targeting the general classifications and hence maintained his rhythm.
He briefed, "It's nice to see Alberto win because obviously he's a big champion and has won many races and I think that's very good for the Tour de San Luis. My objective and the objective of Omega Pharma-Quick Step is to keep the jersey so this is my goal,
not the stage win”.
The cyclist has achieved his and his team’s objective after claiming the top general classifications spot.
He is now leading the category with a total time of 17:27:52. Contador is 46 seconds behind at the second position.
Daniel Diaz, Stefan Schumacher and Vincenzo Nibali are at the third, fourth and fifth positions after the stage 5 classifications.
Alberto claimed 20 crucial points after winning the mountains classifications. Miguel Angel Rubiano, Levi Leipheimer and Renato Dos Santos claimed the next three positions, with 17, 14 and 11 points to their credit.
Alberto has not raced since the Tour de France 2011 and has done well to claim two stages at the Tour de San Luis 2012.
His previous victory came at the 168.2 kilometre chase to Mirador del Potrero, during the third stage.
The 29-year-old is also eyeing the overall classifications and, with two more stages to go, he is definitely a good podium contender.
