Alberto Contador wins sixteenth stage of 2011 Giro d’ltalia Tour: Cycling News
Saxo Bank-Sungard team’s Alberto Contador showed his tremendous performance in the sixteenth time trail stage and also took overall lead in 2011 Giro d’ltalia Tour on Tuesday, May 24.
The 28-year-old, Contador clinched his second stage victory of this season. The race started in Belluno and ended at Nevegal.
The Spanish rider Alberto took a total of 28 minutes and 55 seconds to cover the distance of 12.7 kilometres.
Vincenzo Nibali of Liquigas-Cannondale was in the second spot with 34 seconds behind Contador. While Michele Scarponi of Lampre-ISD team finished third with a difference of 38 seconds.
Igor Anton Hernandez of Euskaltel-Euskadi came in 13th place, 1 minute and 21 seconds adrift of Alberto.
In the beginning of the race, there was a minute of silence in respect of Xavier Tondo of the Movistar team, who died in domestic accident on Monday.
There were lot of fan on the roads to cheer the two strong riders, Scarponi and Nibali. Earlier in the race, Stefano Grazelli of the Acqua & Stefano team made the first move and won the Mountain Competition. 
The young rider, Roman Kreuziger of Astana team paced his speed, but Nabali maintained his advantage over Scarponi and Contador. He built a lead of five seconds ahead of Rujano and thought that he had won the stage when Lampre-ISD, Scarponi was four second behind him. However, in the last few kilometres, Saxo Bank Sungard team kept the race under control and with the help of his team-mate he crossed the line without any difficulty.
Recently, Alberto won overall Vuelta a Murcia stage race and also overall won Volta a Catalunya and fourth stage of Vuelta a Castilla y Leon.
Roman Kreuziger of Astana team won the title of Best Young rider and Alberto won the title of Most Combative rider classification.
Three time tour de France champion, Alberto Contador also took the lead in overall classification with the timing of 62 hours, 43 minutes and 37 seconds. Michele Scarponi was in second place with 4 minutes and 58 seconds behind Alberto.
Vincenzo Nibali finished third with the difference of 5 minutes and 45 seconds.
The next stage will start in Feltre and end in Tirano. All the riders will cover the distance of 230 kilometres.
