Alberto Rossel defies all odds against Jose Alfredo Rodriguez to become WBA champion - Boxing News
Alberto Rossel, the former WBA Fedelatin flyweight champion, finally accomplished his dream of becoming a world champion and collected a unanimous decision win over the Mexican Jose Alfredo Rodriguez, in a 12-round bout held on April 14, 2012 to become the
new WBA world light flyweight champion.
The ring for the bout was stretched at Coliseo Dibos Dammert, Lima, Peru and the above duo constituted the main event of the night. The pay-per-view was organised and promoted by Jorge Bartra and the night was co-headlined by the WBA Fedelatin light middleweight
title-bout between David Zegarra and Juciel Lima Nascimento.
The Saturday night show mesmerised the natives of Peru who felt proud when their man Alberto finally gave them the first ever world championship gold in the sport of boxing.
Rossel, 34, was entering in his career’s 37th bout and is known as one of the most hardcore brawlers who have strived to become a world champion and have undergone a life that not much people have experienced.
Being his country’s one and only flyweight, the night became a memorable one for Alberto when he defied all the odds and nailed the young Mexican who was entering the ring with a huge undefeated win streak.
Alberto boasted 27 wins with 13 of them via knockout and Jose, on the other hand, was fighting his career’s 29th bout and exhibited 28 wins with 17 of them via KO in his resume.
In addition, the young Mexican proudly held many divisional titles and was defending his recently acquired WBA gold for the first time. Jose collected a split decision win in his favour over Nethra Sasiprapa to become the WBA World light flyweight champion.
The bout started and the Peruvian nation witnessed an impressive show of resilience, pugilism, agility, footwork and above all their man holding the title high up in the sky making them proud.
Jose put everything in the bout and threw many well-targeted jabs that rattled Alberto’s world but the chants of his people boosted his motivation and eventually it was Alberto who collected 118-110, 115-113, 116-112 in his favour to become the first ever
world champion hailing from Peru.
After the bout, in a short media interaction, Alberto who was overwhelmed by the historic win, just said, “This is for Peru, all of Peru are champion. I waited all my life this night.”
The win is like a dream come true for Alberto who has been following the world champion title in three different divisions and eventually was able to achieve the almost unthinkable on last Saturday night.
Rossel now has 28 wins in his account and Jose, unfortunately has collected not only his career’s first loss but also lost the precious world title.
