Question:

Alcohol and breastfeeding?

I want to have a half a glass of wine and take a bath. I just fed my 3 week old and the lactation consultant said to wait 3 hours after drinking to feed him again. I have enough milk pumped for one feeding, about 3.5 oz. My mother is convinced that he will not take a bottle though. Anyone else have experience with this? I know he won't wait a full 3 hours and to tell you the truth I don't think I'd be comfortable breastfeeding for longer then that anyway just to be sure.

  1. I have breastflow bottles also and I was still told not to introduce a bottle until 4 weeks to avoid nipple confusion. I read that one drink only takes an hour and won't be preset in breastmilk though.

  2. Dont do it.

  3. Yeah, I'm still pregnant and I would drink half a glass of wine.  You can go ahead and nurse your baby when he's ready.

Once your body metabolizes the alcohol from your blood, it will be gone from your milk as well.  Have a half glass of wine and enjoy your bath.

    Cheers!

  4. hi have your nice half a glass of wine you deserve it, you can try him on the bottle if he is hungry he will take it if he dont take it just wait a bit im sure he will be patient at first but i had a glass of wine with tea when i was breastfeeding and it didnt bother my little one 3 hrs is a long time just make sure you have eaten and your body will absorbe it quicker

  5. You can feed whenever you want. You would have to drink an insane amount of alcohol for your baby to get enough to make a difference.

That being said, chronic heavy drinking is not a good idea when breastfeeding, and has been associated with low weight babies.

  6. Half a glass?  Hon, you are FINE!.  The lactation consultant in my breastfeeding class said if you are OK to drive, you are OK to breastfeed.  :) While I won't go quite that far, most books agree that one drink per day is absolutely fine...if you drink it right after you feed, you shoudl be fine by the next time he's hungry.  There are also "experts" that say you will get more milk when you pump if you drink a beer while you are doing it (the thinking here is that it relaxes you).  Ha...I haven't tried that, but wouldn't that be interesting? Also...one thing on your mother and the bottle...do not wait too much longer to introduce the bottle, otherwise you will have a hard time getting him to take it.  I would say try to do one at least a couple times a week starting in the next couple weeks.  Good luck and ENJOY YOUR WINE! :)

  7. Half a glass of wine is perfectly fine.  Start running your bath, feed your baby, and go enjoy your glass of wine.
