Is the alcohol content of a beer related to the calories it contains, ie: Does a lite brew of a brand contain the same alcohol content as the regular brew of the same brand? If not, what is the relationship?

  1. Lights have less alcohol and fewer calories.  Alcohol is where the calories are at.

  2. In the US, lite beer has the same alcohol as regular beer, it just has fewer calories.

When I was in Europe however, what they termed "light" beer was low-alcohol, not low-calorie

  3. There is no relationship of alcohol to calories in beer.  High alcohol beer can have a lot of calories, it depends on the beer and the process.  All beer contains carbs and lots of them by volume.  Light beer has much of the carbs stripped away by chemical processes brewers used to reduce them along with calories.

Most light beers are are about 3.5% alcohol by volume (12 oz.).  Most regular beers are about 5% alcohol by volume (12 oz.).  Some imported and micro brews can be as high as 12% alcohol by volume (12 oz.).  Again the amount of calories can vary greatly.  Calories and carbs are usually listed on the bottle.  You can check before you buy.

  4. It depends on the beer. Different states and towns do different things to let you know.

Here in Missouri beer is defined as having a 5% or less content. Malt liquor on the other hand is generally 5% - 10%. Once you're past that they tend to call it malt beverage and then you're on into the hard liquor category. Most of the time if it's over the 5% area they list it on the container.
