  1. alcoholic people are usually depressed and use it to ease the pain of mental suffering, it is an addiction similar to smoking and needs help to overcome (been there ) as I did

  2. Alcoholics Anonymous holds open meetings that you can attend to help you understand alcoholism and addiction.

They are people who are recovering or are in recovery from alcoholism.  It is not curable.  It is a physcial and mental and spiritual disease that will destroy the alcoholic/addict if he/she doesn't seek and utilize the help available.  the best program I have heard of:  detox and then AA.

  3. i am not completley sure but it begins with either socialising or depression and it makes you forget, they usually cant stop because they have a drink to rid themselves of the hangover, they then continue to drink because it makes them forget normal life and they can deal with people and confrontations a lot easier. it rids them of their reasoning so they dont care about much and feel a lot braver and find it easier to cope. they are different from a sober person because a  sober person can function in everyday life......think about it.....speak sense to a  drunk person its almost impossible!!

  4. I am a recovering alcoholic...its a complicated disease...try going to an aa meeting or alanon..charlie d.

  5. I've been in recovery for several years now after battling alcoholism through my teen years.  Some AA meetings are open if you really want to delve into it; otherwise, a call to AA or a doctor might clear up some questions.

To me, alcoholism seems to stem from two areas - depression and biology.  Most alcoholics abuse alcohol to quell some segment of their emotions - perhaps they drink to relieve stress or to avoid facing problems in their lives.  Others have different reasons.  But many times, an alcholic uses alcohol as a means to confront a psychological issue.

Then, there's the biology of it all.  Simply, alcoholics lack the ability to control how much alcohol they consume.  That's the case with me - whenever I feel that little buzz that causes most people to stop, I get an undeniable impulse to drink everything I can.  It's hard to explain and probably hard to understand, but at those times the only thing in the world that matters is getting as drunk as I can.  And not "trashed" like non-alcoholics say, but extremely intoxicated, like alcohol poisoning.  It's really hard to capture in words, but it's a surreal, dangerous, and frightening feeling now that I look back on when I was drinking.

It's regressive in that an alcoholic never gets better - if he ever drinks again, he'll resume where he left off and will soon be worse than when he quit.  That's why alcholics should never drink.

The best source on this is what AA calls the Big Book.  The link below is an electronic version of it.
