Aldrin Garcia sets a new world record with his 45-inch Ollie
Aldrin Garcia has just earned boasting rights for performing the highest Ollie ever. He earned a spot in the skateboarding history books after pulling off a sensational 45-inch high Ollie and setting a new world record, beating the previous world record
of 44.5 inches.
The 19-year-old achieved this landmark during the Maloof Challenge in the midst of Magic tradeshow at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. Of course the feat also enabled him to prevail in the regional qualifiers and triumph over the professional skaters including
Torey Pudwill, Stever Nesser and Levi Brown. His efforts were rewarded with a $10,000 winning prize.
Garcia is an amateur rider currently sponsored by and riding for Powell-Peralta skateboards, Bones wheels and Theeve trucks.
Garcia’s Ollie became the highest Ollie in skateboarding history by beating the previous record by half-an-inch. It was Danny Wainwright who had set the old record by leaping 44.5 inches into the air along with his skateboard. The record was set on Feb 6,
2000, and had remained unbeatable for over a decade.
Interestingly, both Garcia and Wainwright were riding for Powell-Peralta skateboards at the time of their record-setting Ollie.
“This is amazing,” said Garcia after his win. “I'm hyped that I got to keep the world record in the Powell-Peralta family.”
From time to time, quite a few skateboarders have made claims of Ollying higher than Wainwright during the Ollie contests. Three years back in 2008, a skateboarder from New York, Luis Tolentino, was considered to have pulled off a 45-inch Ollie at Billy
Rohan’s Rooftop Rampage stake contest.
However, it failed to get acknowledged, leaving Wainwright’s record intact. All claims of leaping higher than Wainwright had failed to get recognition and were rejected after no substantial evidence was presented to support their claims. However, with the
execution of Garcia’s latest olly, Wainwright’s reign has come to an end. Tolentino was also present at the Maloof Challenge, but was out-ollied by Garcia after making it into the finals.
This was not the first time for Garcia to have found himself in the media spot light. Earlier this year on January 28, the young gun took a nasty fall during the Crossroads Tradeshow and Best Trick contest. He was knocked unconscious after slipping out on
a trick, banging his head hard on the ground and exiting the scene on a stretcher.
For those new to the term Ollie, it is the fundamental trick in snowboarding, performed by leaping into the air along with the skateboard. The tricky part is to get the liftoff, something that requires a lot of practice to learn. Ollie is the first trick
that fresh skateboarders concentrate on, as a significant amount of other tricks depend on it.
