Alec Page dominates Men’s 400m IM heats: Day one - Canadian Olympic & Paralympic Trials
Alec Page of IS dominated the qualification rounds of Men’s 400m Individual Medley (IM) on opening day of the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Trials in Montreal on Tuesday, March 27.
The 18-year-old Page smothered his rivals by qualifying into the playoff as top contender for gold medal. With his immaculate efforts, he is now just one-step away from making his way into the Canadian team to the 2012 London Olympic Games.
The teenager remained prominently ahead of his competitors from the start of the race and sprinted his way towards the finishing end for top qualification spot by posting a time of 4 minutes and 20.02 seconds.
His impressive form placed him in a lead of 3.70 seconds over his compatriot, Andrew Ford of GMAC, who qualified into the final round as second best swimmer by posting a time of 4 minutes and 23.72 seconds.
He was followed by Matthew Kwatyra of LAC, who was almost two seconds slower from Ford and transpired on the finishing wall with the third finest time of 4 minutes and 25.23 seconds. Steven Bielby of PCSC snared fourth qualification sport of the discipline
as he stayed 0.42 seconds behind his preceding swimmer and surfaced on the finishing end with the timing of 4 minutes and 25.65 seconds.
Next were the Women’s 400m freestyle prelims, where Brittany MacLean of ESWIM upset her opponents by acquiring top finish in the event with the timing of 4 minutes and 12.45 seconds.
She was chased by Barbara Jardin of PPO, who remained marginally slower from her foregoing competitor and emerged on the finishing blockade with the timing of 4 minutes and 12.70 seconds.
Jardin was chased by Samantha Cheverton of PCSC, who was just 0.34 seconds slower from her former finisher and hit the finishing end with an effort of 4 minutes and 13.04 seconds.
Lindsay Delmar of UCSC clinched fourth best finishing spot of the event as she tapped the wall with the timing of 4 minutes and 13.15 seconds.
The championship will continue for five more days and will conclude on April 1 after the finalisation of Canadian team.
