Alejandro Falla, Lukasz Kubot through to the third round – French Open 2011
120th ranked Colombian, Alejandro Falla, registered his surprise victory over the world number 19, Florian Mayer of German in the second round of Roland Garros in Paris, France, on Thursday. It took almost three hour
for Falla to conclude victory at 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-1, 6-2, to dispense out the 20th seed German from the contest and make his way through to the third round of the Grand Slam tournament.
It was a surprise loss for the 19th ranked German, as he has been in a brilliant form in the running ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) season by winning 26 matches. It was Falla’s fifth victory of the current
year and the most emphatic one as well.
Mayer had an excellent start to the contest, winning the opening set comprehensively but gradually lost his steam as the game progressed. Falla converted six of his 14 break opportunities, while suffered just three break points
from his opponent. 63 per cent first serve of Falla earned him 57 out of 81 points in the game and he conceded 41 unforced errors, including three double faults, to outplay the Mayer from the contest.
After dropping the opening set early, the Colombian gathered up pace in the following set, dragging the scores to 6-6 to enforce a tie breaker round. He clinched the second set at 7-6(4) and get his momentum from there onwards
to blow away Mayer in the next two sets. He finished off the contest in the fourth set, 6-2, to move into the third round of the French Open, where he will face the Polish qualifier Lukasz Kubot.
The Pole was successful against Carlos Berlocq of Argentine in the second round of Roland Garros. He took two hours and forty nine minutes to wrap up his straight sets victory at 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-3, to meet Falla in the third round
of the competition.
Kubot converted five of his six break opportunities in the match and banged 52 winners to come out as the winner. His 66 percent first serve earned him 54 out of 71 points in the contest while he conceded 30 unforced errors, as
compared to 20 mistakes from the Argentine.
The Pole cruised through the opening set with ease, finishing at 6-3, but had to work his way through the next set, as Berlocq bounced back with some serious aggression. However, Kubot kept his focus in the game and reeled off
the last two sets to register a straight sets victory. His matchup with Falla will take place on Saturday, with the winner getting one step closer to the quarter-finals here.
