Alejandro Falla outplays Alessio Di Mauro in the third round qualifiers of the French Open
Seeded nineteenth in the qualifying draws, Alejandro Falla of Colombia defeated his Italian opponent Alessio Di Mauro in the third round qualies of the French Open on Saturday night. The Colombian took down his opponent in an exciting
three-setter 7-5, 4-6, 6-1, taking two hours and eight minutes of play to book a berth in the main draws of the second Grand Slam event of the year.
It was the first time these two men faced each other and the Colombian defeated Di Mauro to reach the main draws at Roland Garros. It was the fifth victory for Falla in the running ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) season,
while he has already suffered seven losses this year. Falla continued his brilliant form in the qualifying rounds and has won all the three matches in three sets.
It was a low-serve game with both contestants struggling to achieve accuracy in the contest. Falla’s serve precision was 56 per cent throughout, conceding five double faults and three aces. The Colombian had to strain a bit in
the opening set of the match as Di Mauro posed some serious resistance to counter the aggression of his opponent. The Italian finally made a breakthrough in the contest when he bagged the second set to level the match 1-1 but appeared in no sorts of form in
the final set. Falla disposed off Di Mauro in the third set, losing just one game and registering victory to end the Italian’s voyage at the French Open.
Falla had a brilliant stat to the contest, breaking early to lead 3-1. The resilient Italian stood up to the task and stung two straight serve breaks to transfer the pressure upon Falla, who retaliated with two break points to
finally seal the first set at 7-5.
An amazing turnaround was witnessed in the following set, with Di Mauro edging past Falla in most segments of the game. Three doubles faults from the Colombian assisted Di Mauro to stung two serve breaks and seal the second set
at 6-4 to bring the match back to even terms at 1-1.
It all came down to the third set and a stiff contest was anticipated, which actually didn’t happen. The dominated Falla totally devastated the Colombian in the decisive set, winning five games on the trot to reach victory. Falla
dropped serve in merely one game and registered three break points to conclude the match at 6-1, advancing to the main draws of the French Open.
Falla will take on the other Italian, Potito Starace in his opening round match of Roland Garros.
