Alejandro Falla shocks Alexandr Dolgopolov in pre-quarters – Proton Malaysian Open 2012
Colombian star, Alejandro Falla, stunned the fourth seed, Alexandr Dolgopolov, in the second round at the Proton Malaysian Open 2012 on Thursday. He needed three sets to outmuscle the Ukrainian number one at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals)
World Tour 250 Series event held in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur.
The underdog showed exceptional skills to triumph over Dolgopolov in one hour and 32 minutes. The contestants last battled each other at the Brisbane International earlier this circuit and after stealing the show, Falla not only avenged his loss but also
levelled the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head Series by 1-1 against the world number 20.
“I started really bad and missed a lot of balls. I came back in the second set but it was an up and down match. I am not too happy with it,” the disappointed Ukrainian stated in an on-court interview after crashing out to Falla.
Falla entered into the Putra Indoor hard court event with poise. He drew the first blood in the fourth game and took a 3-1 lead. Apart from losing his edge in the very next game, the Colombian broke his opponent’s serve again in the sixth game and eventually
sealed the opener by winning six games to three.
The 23-year-old re-focused his strategy in the proceeding set. He got the desiderated break in the second game and leaped to a 3-0 lead. Dolgopolov warded off the lone breakpoint he faced and pulled out the equaliser with a 6-3 win.
Ranked 61st in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Falla went berserk in the final set which counted the most. He unleashed barrage of forehands to reel off four games in a row. Despite losing his serve in the fifth game, the Colombian
held his composure and subsequently clicked the decider with a 6-3 win.
Falla will lock horns with the seventh seed, Julien Benneteau, who dumped Australia’s Matthew Ebden in straight sets to set up this meeting. The seeded French was broken once but capitalised on four out of seven break chances, eventually formulating a 7-5,
6-2 score line in one hour and 14 minutes.
