Alejandro Falla upsets Mardy Fish in the second round clash – Australian Open 2012
Sheer upset for the tennis fans all over the world, as the world number eight, Mardy Fish, crashed out at the hands of the71st ranked Columbian competitor, Alejandro Falla, in the second round of the Australian Open. Unseeded Falla
ousted took three hours to register one of the biggest upsets of the season, downing a Top-10 contestant in an assertive fashion. He wrapped up victory in straight sets, 7-6(4), 6-3, 7-6(6), to book a place in the round of 32 of the Grand Slam event.
A large crowd appeared at the Show Court 3 at the Melbourne Park in Australia to witness the eighth seed American thumping the Columbian underdog. To the dismay of the audience, Fish utterly failed to put up a decent performance
with his racquet and allowed an easy victory to the world number 71 at the end of the competition.
Fish delivered 62 per cent of his first serve on target and secured 39 out of 63 points on it, falling behind his opponent who clinched 44 out of 68 points en route to victory. The American number one was off to a shaky start in
the opening set and his error-ridden game play proved a bit too taxing for him in the later parts of the match.
Dropping his serve in the very first game of the match, Fish recovered later on to level the scores at 6-6, enforcing a tie-breaker round into play. Falla took the better of his Top-10 opponent in the decider and three consecutive
points from his racquet closed out the first set at 7-6(4).
With early damage suffered, Fish never appeared in any sort of form in the following set. His bleak serve was broken in the fourth game and couldn’t recover to avoid losing the second set at 3-6. The world number eight gave a last
try to make a comeback in the third set but his two break point conversions were evenly replied by Falla to bring another tie-breaker round into play. A tougher contest was seen this time around but Falla pocketed some crucial points in the decider to close
out his surprise victory at 7-6(6), marching into the third round of the Australian Open.
