Alejandro Garbi Caro ousts Geoffrey Demont in first round – Saskatoon Boast Open 2011
Espanola Alejandro Garbi Caro became the second qualifier to survive the first round when he outlasted Frenchman Geoffrey Demont with a score of 11-5, 11-7, 8-11, 9-11, 11-5 in 74 minutes at the Saskatoon Boast Open 2011.
The opening round of the match was initiated by the Espanola as he had won the service pitch and he got off to a great start as he not only held his serve but also smashed a few rail shots with a lot of depth. The Spanish qualifier
then got into an intense deep volley but as the Espanola rushed past his adversary he was first to secure the set.
Although, in the second set Demont took a notch higher in his performance, he was still unable to dominate his adversary and was taking his time in setting his rhythm. On the contrary, the Spaniard upped his game as well and this
time he was hitting much more advanced shots like the nick shot and with a superb return he used the cross-court volley to front corner nick technique and eventually clogged the second game as well.
During the third and the fourth game both the players rallied long and neither player wanted the other to take the lead but it was a lucky break through for the Frenchman as he stole away two points. Demont had amazing power and
used a few tactical techniques to leave his opponent flabbergasted as he bagged the two sets.
However, the nail biting match eventually lost its steam in the fifth and the final set and this time Demont was left behind. Moreover, he was tired and was unable to match his opponent’s stamina and his remaining shots all hit
outside. On the other hand Caro kept his control and instead of hitting the ball hard, he chose a much professional style of hitting the ball high. In doing so; his opponent was unable to make a quick return and eventually was restricted to five points in
the game.
The 28-year-old Spaniard progresses to meet top seeded Australian Zac Alexander, who defeated local star and fourth seeded Matthew Serediak.
