Alejandro Valverde continues his dominance at the Vuelta a Andalucia 2012
Alejandro Valverde is targeting the overall victory at the ongoing Spanish race, Vuelta a Andalucia 2012.
He is currently leading the general classifications with a firm lead of 3 seconds over Rein Taaramae of Team Cofidis.
The Spaniard finished 25th during the opening prologue of the race and achieved the 51st position during the stage 1.
He finished first during the 150.7 kilometre stage 2 of the race and jumped to the first overall position after the stage 2 classifications with a lead of 3 seconds over Rein Taaramae.
The 31-year-old thanked his team after crossing the finish-line, "I'm tremendously happy and I want to thank all the team, because they were phenomenal from start to finish of the stage".
He continued, "To tell the truth we didn't plan to race with the leadership in mind, we were just going for the stage victory, because the GC was complicated due to the short climb and the gaps by some of our rivals on the overall".
Alejandro finished 24th during the third stage and maintained his 3 second lead over Team Cofidis' cyclist.
The Spaniard started his 2012 season at the UCI inaugural event, Santos Tour Under and claimed the second overall position after the final general classifications.
Simon Gerrans of Team GreenEdge achieved the first overall victory for the World Tour debutant team.
Alejandro also claimed the fifth stage of the Australian race and is optimistic to grab the first overall win of the season at the Vuelta a Andalucia 2012.
The cyclist joined the Spanish side, Team Movistar in 2012 and has already helped the team with two victories in the young season.
He is currently at the fourth overall position after the stage 3 point’s classifications with a total number of 25 points in his pocket. Valverde is at the fourth overall position at the Mountains classifications.
He is now targeting the 135.7 kilometre chase to La Guardia during the final stage of the race.
The cyclist is clearly amongst the favourites to grab the top podium spot after the final general classifications at the race.
It will be exciting to observe if the Spaniard continues his winning momentum to bag his first overall win of the season.
