Alejo Muniz and Adam Melling secure place in quarter-finals at Vans World Cup of Surfing
Brazil’s Alejo Muniz and Australia’s Adam Melling successfully made it through into the quarter-finals at the Vans World Cup of Surfing, the second of three events on the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, after prevailing in their respective Round 4 (Round of
32) heats that went down at Sunset Beach in Oahu, Hawaii, on Tuesday, December 4, 2012.
Muniz took the win in the seventh heat, while America’s Nathan Yeomans secured second place. Both the surfers consequently made it through into the next stage of the competition. France’s Marc Lacomare and Hawaii’s Sunny Garcia finished in third and fourth
place respectively, which resulted in their elimination from the competition.
The eighth heat saw Melling and Brazil’s Gabriel Medina, who finished in second place, advance through into the quarter-finals, whereas Australia’s Kai Otton and America’s Tanner Gudauskas found themselves removed from the competition field after rounding
out the third and fourth position.
It turned out to be yet another day of intimidating waves at Sunset Beach, with the surfers having to rely heavily on their experience and skills to get their hands on a decent opportunity during the course of their four-man battles for survival.
The seventh heat saw Muniz survive a tough battle against Yeomans, Lacomare and Garcia to make it through into the next stage of the competition.
The Brazilian surfer posted a 7.67 on the score-board off his first business-wave and went on to back it up with a 6.30-point ride, thus registering a heat-total of 13.97 points. The effort proved just sufficient to earn him top position.
Yeomans made the quarter-final cut as well after finishing with a heat-total of 12.76 points, which included a 7.43 and 5.33-point ride.
Lacomare and Garcia, on the other hand, were forced to make a premature exit from the competition after rounding out the bottom-two positions with their heat-total of 9.43 and 8.20 points respectively.
The contest for the final-two spots in the quarter-finals took place between Melling, Medina, Otton and Gudauskas.
The Australian surfer had looked in great touch since the start of the competition and continued his solid run of form on the latest day of the competition.
Scoring an 8.33 and 5.77 off his best-two waves, Melling finished with a heat-total of 14.10 points, which served to seal the fate of the battle in his favour.
Medina successfully extended his life in the competition as well after scoring a 6.00 and 5.17 off his best-two waves for a heat-total of 11.17 points, which was just enough to put him in second place and consequently earn him a place in the next stage of
the competition.
Otton and Gudauskas finished with a heat-total of 10.63 and 10.33 points respectively, which resulted in their elimination from the competition.
