Alejo Muniz and Owen Wright win Round 4 of Quiksilver Pro New York – 2011 ASP World Tour
The fourth round of Quiksilver Pro New York continued with the third and fourth heat on Thursday, September 8, at Long Beach, New York.
Brazil’s Alejo Muniz came up with an impressive performance during the third heat to clinch a convincing victory over his compatriot, Heitor Alves, and Hawaii’s Fredrick Patacchia. The victory sent Muniz directly into the quarter-finals, while Alves and
Patacchia were relegated to Round 5 after rounding out the second and third positions respectively.
The fourth heat saw Australia’s Owen Wright dominate his countrymen, Julian Wilson and Joel Parkinson, to secure his place in the quarter-finals. Wilson and Parkinson finished in second and third place respectively, consequently forced to compete in the
relegation Round 5 to stay in contention for the event title.
While six-foot waves were gracing the primary event site, the surfers failed to make the most of them due to the presence of strong winds. Riding waves under the prevailing conditions was indeed proving to be a challenging task.
The third heat of Round 4 saw all three surfers struggling to earn big scores off the waves that they caught. However, the 21-year-old Muniz managed to make the strongest impact during the 30-minute heat, scoring 6.17 and 5.93 points off his best waves.
The resultant heat-total of 12.10 points proved sufficient to carry him off to victory.
Alves and Patacchia had been quite impressive in Round 3, but gave a really disappointing performance during their Round 4 bout. The Brazilian finished in second place after scoring 4.57 points off his first wave and 4.07 off his second, consequently finishing
with a heat-total of 8.64 points. On the other hand, Patacchia ended the heat with a two-wave total of 7.13 points, which comprised of a 3.83 and 3.30-point wave.
The final heat of Round 4 saw the 21-year-old Wright steal the show with an outstanding performance, sending Wilson and Parkinson into Round 5.
Almost halfway through the wave, Wright locked a wave to score 7.60 points off it. He soon followed it up with an outstanding 8.77-point wave to finish with a heat-total of 16.37 points. The score remained unbeatable till the end and eventually carried him
off to victory.
Wilson finished the heat in second place after scoring 5.50 points off his first wave and 6.50 points off his second. The effort proved to be futile and resulted in his relegation to round 5.
Parkinson also failed to do justice to his repute by conceding victory to his rival despite the difference in the experience of the two surfers. Parkinson finished with a heat-total of 10.30 points. As a result, he was forced to compete in the relegation
Round 5 as well.
