Alejo Muniz defeats Brett Simpson to grab Rip Curl Pro Search Semi-Final spot – 2011 ASP World Tour
The thrilling surfing action continued at the Ocean Beach in San Francisco, America, on Monday afternoon, November 7, as Brazil’s Alejo Muniz squared off with America’s Brett Simpson in the third Quarter-Final of Rip Curl Pro Search San Francisco.
Both the surfers came up with impressive performances, determined to clinch the Semi-Final spot on offer. After the thrilling contest came to a close, it was Muniz who walked away with top honours, advancing one step closer to the title shot while bringing the competition to a premature end for his rival, Simpson.
The 21-year-old Muniz had a pretty good ASP World Tour season so far, delivering impressive performances at various events. Despite getting a handful of good starts, the Brazilian surfer never quite managed to see himself through to the end and consistently faltered after getting into the crucial stage. of the competition. The 10th stop of the elite tour saw him exhibit a remarkable form since the very first day and he smoothly made his way through the early rounds without as much as sustaining a scratch to move into the Quarter-Finals.
Simpson, on the other hand, had a pretty tough run so far. He had gotten off to a weak start, tasting defeat in Round 1. After bouncing back in Round 2, he ended up faltering in Round 4 once again though Simpson evaded elimination through a spectacular performance in Round 5 and got into the Quarter-Finals to face Muniz.
With high-performance three-to-five foot waves on offer, the third Quarter-Final got under-way. Simpson adjusted to the conditions pretty quickly and made an early charge to post a 7.00 on the score-board. After getting off to a great start, he tried to kept the momentum going but only managed to add another 4.83 points to his account, taking his heat-total to 11.83 points and pushing the in-form Muniz on the back-foot.
Muniz struggled to find a good score in the early stages of the battle, but eventually found his rhythm and got back into the fight with an impressive 7.83-point wave almost half-way through the heat. Not requiring a really big score for a win after a competitive first business-wave, Muniz performed the coup de grace with a 6.00-point wave, sealing the fate of the battle in his favour and consequently going through into the next round.
