Alejo Muniz wins Round 4 to enter Rip Curl Pro Search Quarter-Finals – 2011 ASP World Tour
The 2011 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour continued to deliver high intensity action at the Ocean Beach in San Francisco, America, as Australia’s Owen Wright squared off with America’s Brett Simpson and Brazil’s Alejo Muniz in the third
heat of Rip Curl Pro Search San Francisco’s Round 4 on Sunday, November 6.
The battle for top honours turned out to be real intense and kept everyone holding their breath until the very last minute when Muniz eventually took an excellent come-from-behind victory to secure his place in the Quarter-Finals. Simpson was forced to settle
for runner-up place, whereas Wright rounded out the third position after giving a rather lacklustre performance.
The 21-year-old Muniz had looked to be in an extremely good form at the latest elite tour event so far. He had prevailed comfortably in the first round to move into the third round directly and made it through his Round 3 heat without sustaining as much
as a scratch.
Simpson and Wright, on the other hand, had been a bit inconsistent in the event so far, though they had done exceptionally well to recover from a bad start and make it through the second and third round to get into Round 4.
With high performance waves and strong waves on offer at the primary event site, the third heat of Round 4 got under-way. All three surfers struggled to adjust to the conditions during the early stages of the heat and failed to get their hands on a decent
score.
As the heat entered its final minutes, Muniz managed to break free of the shackles and locked a wave to pull off a combination of impressive tricks to post a 7.00 on the score-board. He kept the charge going and immediately followed his previous wave with
a 7.60-point wave to take his heat-total to 14.60 points.
Simpson was able to get his hands on a couple of decent scores off his final two waves as well, though they proved insufficient to get him past Muniz’s two-wave total. Scoring 6.23 and 6.60 points off his top-two waves, he finished in second place with a
heat-total of 12.83 points.
Wright finished in third place after scoring 4.33 and 5.03 points off his first and second business waves respectively. The lacklustre performance resulted in his and Simpson’s relegation to the fifth round to surf again in order to try and get a place in
the Quarter-Finals.
