Aleksander Ostreng claim top honours in men’s Slopestyle Final at 2012 Burton European Open
Norway’s Aleksander Ostreng emerged triumphant in the men’s Slopestyle Finals at 2012 Burton European Open that went down at LAAX, Switzerland, on Thursday, March 1.
Finland’s Roope Tonteri managed to secure the runner-up place while his fellow countryman Peetu Piiroinen finished third to round out the podium.
While all eyes were on the likes of the multi-discipline Winter X Games gold medallist Mark McMorris and his Canadian compatriot Sebastien Toutant, it was Ostreng who managed to take an excellent come-from-behind victory to walk away with top honours on
Thursday.
The Norway-based rider had not gotten off to a very confident start in the battle for the top spot on the podium. As the Final got done with the first-two runs, Ostreng found himself sitting in fourth place.
Pushed against the wall, he came back strongly in his third run with an outstanding display of skills, style and innovation. Kicking off the run with a half Cab 50-50 to back-side 360 off before moving into a back-side rodeo and switch front-side rodeo section,
a massive front-side 1080 indy grab, a back-side 1260 melon grab, a Cab 180 to 360 out on the flat rail before capping the run with a tail-blunt 2770 out on the down rail, Ostreng left very little doubt in everyone’s mind about who was going to occupy the
highest spot on the podium.
The sensational run earned him a 90.08 for the effort, moving him from fourth place straight to first place, consequently sealing the fate of the Final in his favour and bringing him to top on the overall Burton Global Open Series standings.
“It was a big surprise, actually,” Ostreng said. “That was fun, for sure. I didn't expect it at all. I guess we'll have a few beers tonight.”
Tonteri and Piiroinen claimed the remaining two spots on the podium after finishing in second and third place respectively. Both the Finnish riders landed their variation of the back-side 1260 in their runs.
The biggest shock in the Final was McMorris finishing in 15th place after failing to complete even one run, while Toutant sat at seventh place after the Final concluded.
