Aleksandr Kerzhakov unfazed by interest from Liverpool
Zenit St. Petersburg striker Aleksandr Kerzhakov has confirmed that Liverpool approached his agent about a possible transfer, but he has insisted that he is happy at his current club.
Kerzhakov, who joined Zenit from Dynamo Moscow in January 2010, has scored 12 goals in 26 league appearances, helping Zenit to solidify their position at the top of the Russian Premier League table.
Despite losing 3–1 to title rivals CSKA Moscow on Wednesday, 10 November, Luciano Spalletti's team is enjoying a six-point lead at the top of the table with three games remaining.
In addition, the Russian has impressed national team manager d**k Advocaat during the team's Euro 2012 qualifiers, scoring the opening goals against the Republic of Ireland and Macedonia during the autumn.
Kerzhakov's form has sparked the interest of several clubs, and the striker has now told
Rossiyskaya Gazeta that Liverpool made an inquiry to his agent.
"The talk about Liverpool is not baseless," the 27-year-old said. "The British club came to my agent with a proposal, but I did not give an answer. I have other things to think about and in all respects, I am happy in Russia."
Happy to remain in Russia
Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson has been backed by co-owner John Henry to strengthen his squad in the January transfer window, but Kerzhakov insisted that he was happy in St. Petersburg after spending two seasons abroad between 2006 and 2008, when he played for
Sevilla in La Liga.
"My team is in first place in the national championship and I have always said that I wanted to play for Zenit. In the case of Liverpool, I will take no initiative, but I can count the fingers on one hand for the amount of clubs I could theoretically go
to. This is because Zenit is playing beautiful, modern football and the club is growing rapidly. And I am here, at home."
