Aleksandra Krunic beats Laura Pous-Tio to reach the quarter-finals – Baku Cup 2012
World number 213, Aleksandra Krunic, ousted the 131st ranked Spanish star, Laura Pous-Tio, in the second round of the Baku Cup to reach the quarter-final stages of the tournament all the way from the qualifiers.
She registered straight sets 7-6(5), 6-3 scores against the 27-year-old Spaniard on the eve of Wednesday utilizing almost an hour and 58 minutes at the hard courts of Baku, Azerbaijan.
Krunic, just 19-year-old, started the match in poor fashion; dropped first two serve games and drowned to a trail of 0-3. Everyone expected the Serb to fall off early in the match but she proved them wrong and bounced back with
successive breakthroughs to level the scores at 3-3.
The 27-year-old Spaniard was stunned by the classy display from the Serb teen. However, there was no breakpoint shared by any player in the remaining portion of the opening set that enforced the tie-breaker round into play. Luckily
for the Serb starlet, one of her returns smashed the net and dropped in her opponent’s half that gave her an early mini-break. The Spaniard was furious to see her rival going up in that fashion and committed an unforced error that confirmed her defeat in the
opening set.
The second set witnessed a conventional start to the match with both players holding on to their initial serve games.
However, the tables were turned upon the Spanish rival in the third game when she was forced to save a breakpoint to hold serve but she couldn’t that gifted a lead of 2-1 to her competitor.
The pressure was further enhanced with another breakthrough in the fifth game that posted a resounding lead of 4-1 for the Serb teen.
Krunic saved a couple of breakpoints in the seventh game but couldn’t repeat the heroics on the third occurrence that diminished the trail to just two games for the Spaniard. Both players held their serves in the following two
games before Tio gifted the pivotal breakpoint to the Serb teen in the final game of the match.
Aleksandra Krunic is drawn to play against the fifth seed compatriot, Bojana Jovanovski, in the quarter-final clash.
