Aleksandra Krunic topples Margarita Gasparyan to enter semis – Ankara Cup 2012
Serbian starlet, Aleksandra Krunic, slew the Russian challenger, Margarita Gasparyan, with a breadstick at the Ankara Cup 2012 on Thursday. She juggled up a 6-1, 6-2 victory against the 18-year-old to power into the final four at this ITF (International
Tennis Federation) Women’s Circuit event held in Ankara, Turkey.
Seeded seventh in this event, Krunic showed tremendous skills to outfox Gasparyan in their second meeting. After earning the fame in almost an hour-long venture, Krunic not only avenged her loss at the Tyumen ITF event earlier this season but also levelled
the head-to-head series against the world number 224.
Krunic stormed into the Ankara Tennis Club. She winded up five games in a row before Gasparyan could snatch a break back. The Serb availed another break chance after that and consequently bagged the breadstick. She failed to ward off the lone breakpoint
she came across but converted three out of six break chances to her advantage.
Ranked 171st in the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Rankings, Krunic kept her momentum sailing into the proceeding set. She drew the first blood in the second game and climbed to a 3-0 lead. Despite losing her edge in the fifth game,
the Serb remained focused and winded up the last three games with two breaks of serve. She fended off three out of four breakpoints she faced but cashed three out of seven break chances to achieve her goal.
Next in queue for Serbian starlet is the second seed, Monica Puig from Puerto Rico. The higher seed devastated the Uzbekistani challenger, Akgul Amanmuradova, with a bagel to set up this clash. She winded up the opening 10 games before clobbering a 6-0,
6-2 victory in less than an hour.
The fifth seed, Marta Sirotkina from Russia, will accompany Krunic in the last four. She crushed the top seed, Mandy Minella, with a breadstick to advance. The Russian dominated in the opening set tie-breaker to move a step closer towards glory. She unleashed
barrage of winners in the following set and eventually formulate a 7-6(5), 6-1 score line in almost one hour and 15 minutes.
