Aleksandra Wozniak apologises to her fans for withdrawing from Bell Challenge – Tennis News
Canada’s Aleksandra Wozniak has apologised to the people of her country for pulling out from her second round match at the Bell Challenge in Quebec City.
A big number of spectators came to see the Canadian number one in action but she did not take the court. Wozniak was scheduled to play USA’s Melanie Oudin for a place in the last-eight stage of this event, which is being held on
the hard courts. However, she withdrew from the encounter due to a shoulder injury, which she sustained during a warm up session few hours before the scheduled time of her match against Oudin.
The Canadian player said during a press conference, "I injured my shoulder during my warm-up this evening. I will have an MRI in the morning to see exactly what is wrong. I apologize to all my fans who came out to see me play tonight
and to the Bell Challenge, which always does a great job and treats me so well here in Québec.”
In the first round, Wozniak ousted the former number one in doubles, Elena Vesnina of Russia, in three sets 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in an hour and 50 minutes. She was expected to do well at this event, as she is in good form these days.
Canada’s best women player also added that she would be back next year. She stated, “I look forward to coming back and playing here again next year."
Wozniak treated her Canadian fans well at the Rogers Cup last month, when she advanced to the last-eight stage. At that event, the 25-year-old stunned the former world number five, Slovakia’s Daniela Hantuchova, in the first round.
Then she ousted former top ranked player, Jelena Jankovic of Serbia, in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 in the round two. However, she could not outgun the then world number eight, Caroline Wozniacki, for a place in the last-four stage of the event.
There was more disappointment for the Canadian fans, as Eugenie Bouchard first gave them hope but then lost to the eighth seed, Lucie Hradecka of Czech Republic, in three sets 6-7(2), 6-2, 6-7(4) in the second round.
