Aleksandra Wozniak becomes Canadian female player – Tennis News
Canadian professional, Aleksandra Wozniak, received the “Canadian female player” award for the fifth time. The news was announced on the eve of Thursday, as she returned to the world's top 50 by jumping up 62 spots and after finishing
a successful campaign. The player was plagued with several injuries and was unable to put forward a strong battle against her challengers.
In an interview, Wozniak told the media, “It’s such a nice feeling to be recognized by Tennis Canada with this award. I had a great season this year with many highlights — including my first-ever Olympic Games — and of course being
able to reach the quarters at Rogers Cup in front of such supportive hometown fans. I’m happy to be back in the Top 50, but I’m already looking forward to having a great year in 2013 and I hope I can grow further.”
The award of female doubles player of the year was given to Marie-Eve Pelletier. Eugenie Bouchard pocketed the junior player of the year, in the junior category.
The 25-year-old Canadian contender qualified until the second round of the Australian Open held at the hard courts of Melbourne. However, she was never able to manifest her true potential, suffering a disappointing loss in the
first round of all the major tournaments.
At the Nassau Challenger, she battled through all the rounds without facing any hindrance. She sustained her momentum at the Sony Ericsson Open held at the hard courts of Miami but faced a crashing loss by more experienced Venus
Williams.
The Canadian right-hander encountered the world number one, Victoria Azarenka, and faced an unexpected crash at the French Open. At the Rogers Cup, the local challenger took maximum advantage of her home ground, succeeding until
the quarter-finals.
The reigning world number 43, Wozniak, made it to the quarter-finals of the Texas Tennis Open held Dallas. She gave a straight-sets defeat to Eugenie Bouchard and Klara Zakopalova. At the hard courts of New York, she was unable
to rally beyond the second round of the US Open and bagged home a three-sets failure at the hands of Czech contender, Lucie Safarova.
