Aleksandra Wozniak bounces over Jelena Jankovic to clear round two – Rogers Cup 2012
World number 55, Aleksandra Wozniak, ousted the 18th ranked Serb tennis star, Jelena Jankovic, to clear the second round of the Rogers Cup at her hometown in Montreal, Canada.
She registered her first triumph against the Serb former world number one and that too in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 taking just an hour and 31 minutes at the hard courts.
The opening of the match proved a bit tough for the local player who was forced to save a breakpoint before registering a serve hold but the response from Wozniak was world class. She won four points on the trot on her opponent’s
serve and thumped her to a breakpoint down status in just the second game.
A comfortable serve hold for the Canadian helped her to grow her lead further and exert more pressure on her rival. It was not long before Wozniak broke serve for the second time in the set and took a resounding lead of 5-1 with
just a serve hold away from victory.
However, her glory was locked for few moments as the Serb fought back and broke serve to keep the set alive. Jankovic was expected to bounce back with that breakthrough but she could only witness her opponent winning four out of
five points on her serve that rounded off the first set.
Wozniak started the second set comfortably and got an early breakpoint in the fourth game. She held her serve to pile up a lead of 4-1 in the second set as well.
The longest game of the match witnessed Jankovic saving multiple breakpoints to hold serve but couldn’t find a way out to break serve back and level the scores in the entire set.
Wozniak stated afterwards, "It couldn't have been better, to be here in front of the home crowd and make the third round at a big tournament like this. I was trying to not give her any rhythm; in fact I was trying to make her make
mistakes. I was going for my shots but I was trying to do as few errors as I could at the same time."
The Canadian will play Christina McHale in the next round.
