Aleksandra Wozniak defeats Urszula Radwanska; reaches the semi-finals – Van Open 2011 CH
Aleksandra Wozniak of Canada played the toughest match of the week on Friday, as she was highly tested by the eighth-seeded, Urszula Radwanska of Poland in the quarterfinals of the tournament. However, the surging Canadian emerged
successful in the end with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 score line and advanced into the semi-finals of the Vancouver Open, being played at Hollyburn Country Club, Vancouver, Canada.
Regardless of the disappointing nature of her defeat, it was a respectable trip to Vancouver for the Pole as she struggled hard till the end of the match. Wozniak on the other hand, displayed her excellent tennis skills to edge
past her Polish opponent to get into the last four at Van open 2011.
Wozniak took two hours and five minutes to win this match, as she fired in two aces and mustered 55 percent on her first serve and 56 percent on her second serve respectively. Though, the Canadian double faulted five times, she
made up for it by hammering a whopping number of winners and converting seven of nine breakpoints to her advantage. Although Radwanska did play well, it was only in the opening set, as she converted only three of seven break point opportunities in the opening
frame of play.
Even though the Canadian tennis ace lost the first set, she bounced back with a 53 percent of points in total while her pole opponent hung back with a mere 47 percent and allowing the Canadian to enter the semi-finals where she
is scheduled to meet the third-seeded Irina Falconi of America, who squeak past Croatian Ajla Tomljanovic 6-4, 6-1 for a place in the semi-finals.
A first-serve winning percentage of 57 percent in the opener was the only blemish in a wonderful display from the American, who hit a whopping number of winners and went through her full repertoire of strokes.
Falconi broke in the third game and held comfortably to lead 3-1, aided by her trusty drop-shots to take the early advantage in the first set.
Continuing with the ascent, she powered into 4-2 lead, by breaking her opponent with the help of some powerful forehand and entering the second set with all the momentum she needed to clinch it with a breadstick win.
She now moves on to face Aleksandra Wozniak for the first time in her career as the two women go up against each other for a spot in the finals.
