Aleksandra Wozniak destroys Gail Brodsky in opening round – Bell Challenge 2011
Local wild card entrant Aleksandra Wozniak halted American qualifier Gail Brodsky with a breadstick to progress further at the Bell Challenge 2011, an indoor hard court tournament taking place in Quebec, Canada. She registered
a 6-2, 6-1 score line against the 20-year-old American on Tuesday to advance into the second round.
World number 123, Wozniak dumped the American youngster in just under an hour on their first meeting. The Canadian not only took lead in the head-to-head series by 1-0 against Brodsky but also confidently advanced into the second
round with help from the supportive crowd.
24-year-old Canadian made a thunderous impact in the opening set. After Brodsky held her serve in the first game, she went into savage mode and wiped out next five games in a row with help from their quick forehands and backhands.
Wozniak then held her serve in the seventh game to seal the opener with a 6-2 score line.
She fended off all four breakpoints faced and cashed in on both breakpoint chances to her advantage. The Canadian also had a better first serve share and earned an impressive 62 percent win on it.
Wozniak got the desiderated break in the opening game and after the qualifier came on board for the first time in the third game, she blasted groundstrokes and reeled off last four games in a row. The wild card enterer saved the
only breakpoint faced and converted three out of four breakpoint chances to her advantage. Furthermore, she registered an amazing 72 percent win on her slightly lower first serve share.
Wozniak, who triumph a title at Vancouver ITF last month, will move to the next round to face her fourth seeded compatriot Rebecca Marino.
Marino trashed her countrywoman Stephanie Dubois in straight sets on Monday to set-up this clash. With the help of fourteen aces, the seeded Canadian registered a 6-2, 6-4 victory over her compatriot in one hour and sixteen minutes.
After earning this success on their third meeting, Marino not only took revenge for her loss at Johannesburg last year but also secured a second round spot.
20-year-old Marino manifested a slightly lower first serve share of 50 percent as compared to Dubois’ 52 percent but registered a superb 79 percent win on it. In addition to this, the higher ranked Canadian saved three out of four
breakpoints faced and capitalised on four out of seven breakpoint chances to her advantage.
Both local talents are in great shape and if Wozniak continues to display her exceptional skills, she can easily upset the seed and move far in this WTA event.
