Aleksandra Wozniak is now officially an Olympian – Tennis News
World number 56, Aleksandra Wozniak, had a very special moment before leaving for her first grass court tournament to Eastbourne. She was nominated amongst the team of participants that will represent Canada in the London Olympics,
starting later this summer.
It is finally official, a moment that she was waiting for a long time. She was awarded the official jacket of Olympics by the Canadian Tennis Federation. It meant that she will be representing her country in an event that comes
every four years and rocks the world. This time it will be contested in Wimbledon, London.
Wozniak was brought to tears while conducting a post-announcement press conference. These were the tears of happiness; a feeling of achieving a lifelong dream. She confessed, "It's something I've been dreaming of since I was little
girl, and my dream came true today. I never knew if this dream would be fulfilled. My parents immigrated to Canada from Poland in 1983. They had to start from zero, and I didn't know if they could support my dream, my passion for the sport. But it has come
true."
The Canadian star is in a sublime run of form a strong chance of upsetting big guns like Maria Sharapova, Victoria Azarenka, Agnieszka Radwanska and Petra Kvitova. However, she needs to work on her backhand returns that are often
the main reason of her downfall in the matches. Her opponents usually push her down and force her to play most of the rallies on the backhand that frustrates the Canadian.
She started the year out of Top-100 players in the world and cruised her way into the Top-60 players in just over five months. It has been a terrific recovery for the Canadian who has owned a career-high ranking of world number
21 in 2009.
She further added, “I didn't know how strong I would come back this year. It was hard on the morale. I knew if I worked hard I could come back, but I didn't know where my ranking would be, or if my health would let me down again."
She has contested her first match against the Kazakh experienced contender, Galina Voskoboeva, in Eastbourne on Monday. She was under the cosh and almost on the verge of early exit from the tournament but she saved a match point
at 3-5 than forced her opponent to play a final set tie-breaker round. She took a mini-break and won the tie-breaker and booked a spot in the second round of the tournament.
