Aleksandra Wozniak sails into second round of Monterrey Open 2011
Aleksandra Wozniak continued her impressive run at the ongoing Whirlpool Abierto Monterrey Tennis Championships 2011 when she crushed local Ximena Hermoso to book a place in the second round.
The 23-year-old Wozniak, who was sensational during the qualifying round, played her first round match against Ximena Hermoso. She broke the young Mexican twice to secure the first set 6-2. The second set followed a similar pattern as well. The Canadian
maintained her form and did not drop a single game to wrap up the match 6-2, 6-0 in less than an hour.
Wozniak used her forehands and backhands very effectively to attack her opponent while her defence was rock solid and she made very few unforced errors.
Hermoso on the other hand struggled right from the outset. Once she started playing from the baseline, there was no way for the young Mexican to come back in to the match. The 19-year-old failed to convert the long rallies in her favour. Her defensive strategy
led to her downfall as she managed to win only two games in the whole match.
Aleksandra Wozniak was once ranked as high as 21 in the world singles rankings and defeated the likes of Lucie Safarova, Nadia Petrova and Marion Bartoli in 2009 but her ranking slipped following her continuous failures in the Women Tennis Association events.
She reached her last WTA final at Ponte Vedra Beach, United States in the same year where she lost to current world number one Caroline Wozniacki in straight sets.
However, the Canadian has won all four matches she has played at Monterrey in 2011. She thrashed out Mexican Camila Fuentes, Varvara Lepchenko and Bulgarian Anastasiya Yakimova in the qualifying round and is yet to drop a set in the tournament. However,
the real challenge lies ahead as she takes on top seed players in the upcoming rounds.
Meanwhile Olga Govortsova eased past Czech Renata Voracova in straight sets. The Belarusian clinched the crucial serve break early on and then held onto the lead to take the first set 6-3. Her opponent Voracova looked completely out of sorts as she struggled
to strike the ball well. The Czech lost her serve thrice in the second set to hand an easy victory to Govortsova 6-3, 6-1.
The 22-year-old Govortsova had a terrible start to the 2011 season when she fell in the qualifying round at the Brisbane International. She then experienced a second round failure in Hobart. At the Australian Open 2011, she was knocked out in the first round
by Anna Chakvetadze. However, the former world number 35 restored her lost pride to some extent when she won her fifth WTA title at Memphis.
