Aleksandra Wozniak slashes down Stefanie Voegele in qualifying 2ndround – US Open 2011
The US Open 2011 qualifying second round continued till the 26th of August 2011. The two players contesting on the grandstand against each other were Stefanie Voegele and Aleksandra Wozniak at the USTA Billie Jean King
National Center. Canadian Wozniak won the match in three sets of 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, surviving the mid match lapse in just 2 hours and 4 minutes.
The first set of the match was an easy victory for the 23-year-old Canadian as she whizzed past 21 year-old Voegele in just 33 minutes of play.
Just recently turning pro in 2006, the Swiss (Voegele) was no competition for the Canuck who is currently ranked at world number 134.
Having played top players in the French Open taught Wozniak a few tricks of the trade and she was able to target 63% of her first serves in the match, while the younger opponent was still perfecting her serve and was only able
to target 37% of her first serves in the overall match.
Although, both the players had committed a similar amount of unforced errors and double faults that amassed to 5 each, the Canadian still kept an upper hand by accomplishing 65% of her first serves in the overall match score.
The second set was the longest as both the players had rallied it out against each other, it was a blow for a blow but eventually the Swiss came out victorious.
Taking a beating in the second set Wozniak was not to give up easily and she bounced back to see a comprehensive victory of the third set in just 34 minutes of performance and restricted her opponent to just two games.
Across the board Wozniak converted 8 out of 14 break points, capitalizing on 575 of break points won, in opposition to Voegele, who was only able to convert 6 out of 16 break points. Hence, unable to get the competitive edge that
she required, Voegele lost the match as she was only able to capitalize on 38% of her break points and won only 45% of her receiving points.
By accomplishing 52% of total return points in the match, Wozniak bagged the set with a deftly 6-2 and was able to secure a berth in the qualifying third round.
Born on the 7th of September 1987, Aleksandra Wozniak has contested in a total of 28 matches out of which she has won a grand 19 and lost only 9. She has won one WTA title at the Bank of the West Classic in 2008 and
accomplished a total of eight ITF accolades.
