Aleksandra Wozniak upsets Irina Falconi to reach the final - Odlum Brown Vancouver Open 2011 CH
Another huge upset was witnessed by the local crowd at Vancouver, Canada, when the third seed, Irina Falconi of the United States got beaten by the unseeded local contestant, Aleksandra Wozniak, in the semi-final of Odlum Brown
Vancouver Open, on Saturday afternoon.
Being a part of the ITF (International Tennis Federation) Women’s Circuit, the competition was played on the hard court of Vancouver, with Wozniak living up to the expectations of her home crowd. The unseeded Canadian wrapped up
the contest in straight sets 6-4, 6-4, taking one hour and twenty six minutes of play to make it into the final of the tournament.
Despite of spilling out seven double faults in the matchup, Wozniak went on to dispose of his opponent from the competition. The contest remained competitive till the last minute, with the third seeded Falconi laboring extremely
hard to remain alive in the contest. Falconi had a number of chances in the game but the American squandered away most of them to finish the contest on the losing side. She had 17 opportunities in the matchup to crack in a serve break but she cashed in merely
three chances en route to her defeat.
Wozniak was off to a flyer in the opening set as she broke in the very first game of the matchup to lead 2-0. The Canadian she delivered 74 per cent of her serve on target and earned 22 out of 32 first serve points in the opening
set to get the upper hand in the contest. Falconi registered her first serve break of the day in the sixth game after five deuces, leveling the scores at 3-3 but another break point conversion from the Canadian in the very next game gave her the momentum to
seal the first set at 6-4.
The Canadian again broke early in the following set to lead 3-1, followed by a series of break points from both sides. The American struck two break points in the second set but Wozniak did the same to take back the advantage in
her hand. The Canadian served out of the second set at 6-4, forcing her way to the final of Odlum Brown Vancouver Open, to face the other American contestant, Jamie Hampton, for the singles title. Hampton also registered a surprise victory in the semi-finals
by defeating the fourth seeded Eleni Danillidou of Greece.
