Alessa Quizon and Danielle Ciminero prevail in opening round of ASP 6-Star Movistar Women’s Pro
Hawaii’s Alessa Quizon and America’s Danielle Ciminero advance to the second round (Round of 48) at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star Movistar Women’s Pro presented by Rip Curl and Petrolera Sapet after claiming top honours in their Round
1 heat (Round of 60) heats that went down at the left-hand break of Lobitos in Piura, Peru, on Tuesday, July 24.
Peru’s Bleu Garcia finished behind Quizon in second place during the opening heat of Round 1 to accompany the latter in the next round of the competition, whereas local surfers Andrea Merello and Karen Chavez rounded out the bottom-two position to find themselves
removed from the contention for the even title.
The second heat saw Venezuela’s Adriana Cano accompany Ciminero into the second round after securing runner-up place, pushing Peru’s Karen Mendiguetti to third place which consequently led to her elimination from the competition.
The opening day of the competition saw perfect waves in two-to-three foot range accompanied by offshore winds on offer at the primary event site. The conditions promised to deliver a series of exciting battles throughout the course of the day.
As the first heat of Round 1 got underway, Quizon put on a superb performance to set the day’s standard. Collecting an 8.00 off her first business-wave, she backed it up with an additional 8.15-point ride to move to a heat-total of 16.15 points. The score
kept her well ahead of her rivals on the scoreboard until the end to see her off to victory.
Garcia managed to secure runner-up place with a heat-total of 8.35 points, which included a 4.50 and 3.85-point ride, to advance through into the next round of the competition as well.
Merello finished in third place with a heat-total of 4.85 points, while Chavez rounded out the bottom-position with a two-wave total of 1.75 points.
The second heat saw Ciminero get the better of her rivals after scoring a 2.75 and 4.25 off her best-two waves to finish with a heat-total of 7.00 points.
Cano finished in second place with a heat-total of 3.80 points, which included a 2.00 and 1.80-point rides, which kept her alive in contention for the event title.
Mendiguetti finished in last place after collecting a couple of scores in the one-point range, which took her to a heat-total of 3.15 points.
The thrilling competition continued with the remaining heats of ASP 6-Star Movistar Women’s Pro’s Round 1.
