Alessandro Ballan recovering from a disastrous crash
Alessandro Ballan underwent a surgery and was accompanied by doctors and nurses on his wedding anniversary but the cyclist has now fully recovered and is expected to head back to Spain in a couple of days.
He had a high speed crash earlier this month which resulted in a fractured left femur and three ribs.
Ballan was immediately transported to hospital and his femur was operated on Friday however the doctors suggested, not to remove the kidney which was also damaged during the crash.
Team BMC Doctor Max Texta briefed to La Gazzetta dello Sport that Alessandro condition is improving and is expected to leave the hospital pretty soon.
He also briefed that the Italian has now been moved to a normal hospital ward after leaving the intensive care unit facility.
“We're starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Alessandro's condition is getting better and better, so much so that he is expected to be taken out of intensive care and moved to a normal hospital ward," Max said.
"I spoke to Ballan and his morale seems good. I told him that the team is organising his flight to Italy with a special company so that he avoids any risks. The best thing is if he waits a few more days. He told me that the hospital in Denia has treated
him really well and agree with his plans of when to return to Italy."
Gazzetta dello Sport also noted that the cyclist’s teammates Ivan Santaromita and Steve Morabito are expected to see him at the hospital on their way to Denia.
Team BMC training camp is scheduled in Denia from January 12 and it is expected that Ballan will recover just in time to join the team for new season.
The 33-year-old joined the American team back in 2010 and is a key ingredient in the team’s winning recipe.
Some of his commendable performances in the 2012 season include first place finishes at the Giro di Toscana, Eneco Tour, finished third at the Paris-Roubaix and the Tour of Flanders with a fourth place finish at the Strade Bianche 2012.
