Alessandro Del Piero sees bright future for Juventus
Juventus veteran Alessandro Del Piero has expressed confidence in the Italian club's new players, and said that he wants to continue winning titles for the club before his retirement.
Del Piero, Juventus' highest scorer of all time, has made 459 league appearances for the club since signing for the senior team in 1993.
The striker has won five Serie A titles with the club, as well as two that were stripped of the club following match-fixing allegations. But despite approaching 36 years of age, the Juve fans' most cherished
player does not intend to retire just yet.
"I want to play up to 40 years of age and win titles again here," he told Il Corriere dello Sport. "I hope to do in the new stadium. I'm with [manager Gigi] Delneri, there are no limits. The direct challenge
with Inter Milan will tell us where we are."
Delneri made significant changes
Delneri was hired by Juventus at the end of last season, and his first summer in charge saw a significant shakeup of the squad.
Defenders Leandro Rinaudo, Vincenzo Camilleri and Armand Traore, midfielders Alberto Aquilani, Milos Krasic, Marcel Buchel and strikers Fabio Quagliarella, Leonardo Spinazzola and Niccolo Giannetti were
all brought to the club.
Meanwhile, several key players, including midfielders Mauro Camoranesi, Diego Ribas da Cunha and long-serving striker David Trezeguet, left the club.
"We have changed 10 players this year and it's an important step," said Del Piero, who is confident the new arrivals will strengthen the team, though it's a process that could take time. "The reconstruction
is long and difficult. We have good quality players who have a will to do well."
Juventus finished second in the league in the 2008–2009 season, but have not won the Scudetto since 2002–2003, discounting the two titles that were stripped of the club in 2006. The club's last silverware
was the Coppa Italia in 2006, but despite the trophy drought, Del Piero believes the club can revert to its winning ways.
"Winning now means going back to the old levels and old objectives. Everything can happen."
