Alessandro Giannessi, Frederico Gil enter the quarterfinal – AON Open 2011
Alessandro Giannessi of Italy displayed some high quality in his second round match as he crushed compatriot Alessio Di Mauro 6-4, 6-4 on Thursday to book his place in the quarterfinal of 2011 AON Open Challengers here in Genoa,
Italy.
The Italian looked on top of his game in a match that lasted for only one hour and 27 minutes on the clay courts of Genoa. Looking to book his place in the last eight at the Association of Tennis Professionals tournament, Giannessi
made a shiny start to the match. His supreme serving proved to be the real difference between the contestants as held on to all of his serve games.
Alessio Mauro, who survived a thrilling three setter against Andujar in the opening round, lacked the firepower in several areas of the game as he managed to achieve only one break point in both sets. He will be disappointed with
his effort as he let opportunities pass him by.
Ranked 202nd in the world, Giannessi looked to attack his opponent right from the start of the match. Serving with control and accuracy, he had no troubles securing the points on his service games. Mauro put up a good
fight in the opening set as he managed to clinch his first four service games to even the game score at 4-4. Breaking the serve for the first time in the match, Giannessi earned a tricky 5-4 lead to serve out the set.
Showing no signs of nerves, the Italian dashed his powerful forehand winners on to his opponent’s forehand to set up a couple of set points. Converting the first with an easy passing shot, he took the set score lead 1-0.
The second set also followed a pretty similar trend as Maura struggled to find his game against the hard hitting Giannessi. Committing costly unforced at crucial moments, he let his rival take control of the match.
Breaking the serve for the second time in the match, Giannessi completed an emphatic straight sets victory to advance into the next round. He will be very content with the way he has been responding to pressure situations over
the last few days.
In another match, Portuguese tennis pro Frederico Gil secured a thumping 6-1, 6-4 victory over Kristijan Mesaros of Croatia to make it to the quarterfinals.
Gil looked in commanding form in match that lasted for just over an hour and 20 minutes. Breaking the serve at regular intervals, he did not allow his opponent to come back into the contest. He will be hoping to continue his impressive
run here in Genoa by making it to the final stages.
