Alessandro Giannessi edges past Antonio Veic into semi-final – Tennislife Cup 2011 CH
Italian Alessandro Giannessi dumped Croat Antonio Veic in straight sets at the Tennislife Cup 2011, an ATP Challenger Tour event held on the clay courts at the Greenpark Posillipo in Napoli, Italy. He registered a 6-4, 7-5 victory
over the 23-year-old Croat to advance into the last four at his home soil on Thursday.
World number 157, Giannessi required almost two hours outclassing the Croat, ranked eight places below him, on their first meeting. After earning success at this Challenger event, he got one step closer to the finals.
Giannessi made quickly on the €42,500 track and after warding off both breakpoints faced, he convincingly held entire serves. The local star then converted one out of two breakpoint opportunities to his advantage to win the opener
with a 6-4 score line. He formulated a much better first serve share of 77 percent as opposed to Croat’s 62 percent and registered an impressive 72 percent win on it.
21-year-old Italian kept momentum rolling into the final set and held his opening serve comfortably. He then took the first blood in the third game but lost his edge in the very next game to square the scores at 2-2. Giannessi
then held remaining serves through exquisite forehands from his arsenal of skills and broke the Croat’s serve again in the eleventh game to clinch the set by winning seven games to five. He manifested a higher first serve share of 74 percent as compared to
Veic’s 56 percent and earned a plausible 59 percent win on it.
Giannessi is currently in great shape after winning eight out of ten matches. He made into the quarters of the Bucharest through qualifiers and also made final eight showing at Szczecin and Genova Challenger earlier this month.
The La Spezia native will next face the winner of the match between the winner of the match between second seeded Argentinean Carlos Berlocq and Romanian Adrian Ungur. The delighted local star needs to play his original game and
maintain his composure to triumph over the winner in order to progress and to clinch his maiden title.
