Alessandro Giannessi enters final eight beating Martin Cuevas - Uruguay Open 2011 CH
Uruguayan Martin Cuevas entered the match with the hopes of winning on home soil but eighth seeded Italian Alessandro Giannessi won the match 6-4, 5-7, 6-4. It was a well-balanced second round match at the 2011 Uruguay Open. Both
players gave their best shot in all three sets of the match. As the first set progressed, neither of the two players could score points with their aces. The Uruguayn was on the spot with his serves, as he did not concede any double fault. Giannessi did concede
a double fault in the set but he had a higher first serve winning rate of 74%. Cuevas had a 69% first serve winning rate.
As the first set progressed, the Italian won 72% from his first serves and 56% from his second serve. On the other hand, the Uruguayan won 59% points from his first serves and 50% from his second. In terms of saving breakpoints,
Giannessi was right on target as he was successful in saving both of his breakpoints and did not let Cuevas in breaking his serves. Giannessi was able to save four breakpoints out of the five chances he had. Cuevas was cruising to a first set win when he was
able to win four games but he could not move any further as Giannessi won the first set 6-4.
When the second began, Cuevas took an aggressive start as he won points with two aces and conceded a double fault once. Giannessi did not deliver an ace but he did burden himself by conceding double faults twice. They had a 71%
first serve winning ratio while Cuevas had a 61% winning rate. In the second set, both players had an equal stance in terms of their winning ratios. Giannessi, ranked at world number 136th spot in the world, won 60% points from his first serve and
his service points reduced when he could win 30% points with his second serves. Ranked at number 587th spot in the world, Cuevas won 68% points from his first serve and 50% points from his second.
21-year old Giannessi was successful in saving three out of the six breakpoints he faced while 19-year old Cuevas could only save a single breakpoint from the three chances he got. The Italian was on the verge of winning the second
set and winning the match, but Cuevas managed to make a comeback as he restricted Giannessi to five games and won the set 7-5. The Uruguayan showed decency in pace in the second set which was not expected by the Italian.
Entering into the third set, Cuevas was showing his dominance as he scored points by delivering aces twice in the set. He conceded a double fault and had a 68% first serve winning ratio as compared to Giannessi’s 77% winning rate.
Both players were going toe-to-toe in the second set for the quarterfinal place was at stake.
Giannessi won 63% points from his first serve and 50% from his second while, Cuevas won 67% points from his first serve and 30% from his second. Giannessi could save one out of the two breakpoints he faced while Cuevas was successful
in saving two out of the four breakpoint chances he had. Urugyan’s immature nature was the reason he could not cope up as Giannessi won the third set 6-4 and qualified for the quarterfinals of the 2011 Uruguay Open.
