Alessandro Giannessi pins down Albert Montanes in opening round – BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy 2011
Setting up the first upset of the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy 2011, Alessandro Giannessi, Italian and a qualifier, went on dismantling the 8th seeded Albert Montanes in the opening round of the Bucharest Open, Romania,
an ATP tour 250 tournament. Dragging down the world No.53 to his knees, the 21-year-old stepped on the Spaniard winning 7-5, 6-4 in an hour and 48 minutes.
Although ranked world No. 183, the 21-year-old Spaniard had a remarkable 10 match record, winning 8 out of those. Standing up at his career best rank, Giannessi advantaged from him young age and a sharp mind.
Firing up the starter, Montanes won the toss and served first. Starting off with a bang, the first 4 games of the first set finished off as the two levelled up at 2-2, however, none of them won on their own serves. Serving up next,
Montanes blistered the 5th game with 3 game points switching the serve back to the 21-year-old.
Ranked world No.183, Giannessi, levelled up each time the Spaniard aimed to gain a commanding lead. With scores now at 5-5, the Italian boy wonder struck with a sudden breakpoint in game 11 and led the set, 6-5. With the eventual
decider on its way, Giannessi served out game 12 winning the set 7-5 and commanding the match 1-0.
Continuing with set two, Montanes once again tried to play with more of an offensive technique and surprisingly it did no good. Breaking early for the second time in the match, the 21-year-old got on the nerves of the Spaniard
frustrating leading him to lose his concentration.
Yet, the former world No.22 gained stability when he broke back in game 2 to level the scores but luck had a better choice for a winner. Breaking back, the Italian thrashed the higher ranked rival viciously in 2 straight games
extending his lead to 3-1.
The game slowed down as the two won all of their respective serves and neither would let up. Maintaining the 2 games lead, Giannessi cruised on to winning the second set, 6-4, and the match in straight set and jumped off into the
2nd round pool.
With a productive start in the tournament, Giannessi is hoping to win another round as he rivals Portuguese, Frederico Gil, in the second round of the event.
