Alessandro Giannessi shocks Joao Souza in quarterfinals – Uruguay Open 2011 CH
Italian Alessandro Giannessi proved himself as a worthy contender when he defeated Brazilian Joao Souza in straight sets to qualify for the semi finals of the 2011 Uruguay Open. Giannessi won the match,
6-3, 6-3 and gave an amazing performance against a much experienced competitor.
As the first set progressed, both players delivered a single ace and conceded double faults twice in the set. Souza had a 45% first serve winning rate while Giannessi was able to secure a 52% rate.
The Brazilian won 85% points from the first serve but his game faltered back terribly as he could only win 19% points from his second serve. The Italian, on the other hand, won 75% points from his
first serve and 55% points from his second. Ranked at 101st spot in the world, Souza could only save a single breakpoint from the four he faced but the 136th ranked Giannessi was able to save a single breakpoint from the two chances
he had.
The Brazilian would not have thought to face any such resistance from Giannessi, but the Italian was playing mature tennis as he restricted Souza to just three games in the set. The Italian was playing
under pressure in the quarterfinals against an able competitor. Giannessi handled the pressure very well as he won the first set 6-3.
As the second set started, the Brazilian had a good start but he could not retain the momentum as the set progressed. 21-year old Giannessi delivered an ace in the match and conceded double faults
twice. He had a 70% first serve winning rate, lower than Souza’s 77%, but the Italian was gaining points and lead with his serves. Souza won 82% points from his first serve but he could not win any points from his second serve.
The Brazilian was defending his stance but Giannessi was moving ahead with his confidence and passion for the game. Giannessi won 81% points from his second serve and 44% from his second, but his service
points were enough to give him the pace to stay ahead.
Souza, who has a win/loss ratio of 112/98 in ATP division could not show the dominance which he was expected to deliver. He could not overpower Giannessi, who has a win/loss ratio of 19/19 in the ATP
circuit. The Brazilian was able to save two of his breakpoints from the three chances he faced. On the other hand, the Italian was successful in saving both of his breakpoints. The Brazilian could not use his experience as Giannessi won the second set 6-3
and entered the semi finals of the 2011 Uruguay Open.
