Alessandro Giannessi struggles past Frederico Gil into round of 8 - BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy 2011
Frederico Gil, Portuguese world No.100, went off playing against the world No.183, Alessandro Giannessi, Italian, in round of 16 of the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy 2011. Playing at the Romanian capital, Bucharest, the Italian 21-year-old
stunned his rival winning the two hour and 25 minutes match, 7-6(2), 0-6, 6-3 to move into the quarterfinal.
Moving on with the match, Gil started off with the opener and rolled down the scoreboard, 1-0. Following the Portuguese, the 21-year-old won his first game of the match and levelled up the scores, 1-1. Firing up early, the two
went on breaking each other, one after the other, and landed on level once again, 3-3.
Battling out and winning on respective serves, the set eventually went into a tiebreak with the Portuguese to serve first. Winning the first four points the 21-year-old frustrated his rival causing him to eventually lose the tiebreak
2-6. Giannessi bagged the win and went off to serve first in set 2.
Serving the set 2 opening game, the young Italian was brought down with force. The world No.100 slammed his rival taking a brutal revenge winning the set with a bagel. Breaking the Italian boy wonder 3 times, game 1, 3 and 5, the
Portuguese went ruthless, returning the ball on his challenger’s side like a bomb.
Levelling the match scores at 1-1, the two went on playing the decider set. Beating the 21-year-old with a bagel sent the Portuguese into the commanding position. However, Gil paid off for his over-confidence and went down with
insult.
Giannessi served out the first game of the decider switching the serve to the higher ranked Portuguese. Levelling up the score, Gil won game 2 eyeballing the 21-year-old to oppress him out. Gaining his momentum, the Italian went
of clearing up game 3 with a close breakpoint save.
The two once again levelled up at 2-2 with the Portuguese right-hander winning game 4. Stunning the World No.100, Giannessi served-broke-served and went on leading the set 5-2. The 26-year-old could do nothing other than grind
his teeth and feel the insolent defeat.
Serving out one of the last two games, Giannessi clinched the final set as the scoreboard read 7-6(2), 0-6, 6-3 in favour of the Italian. The 21-year-old now moves on to the quarterfinal round of the event to face the fourth seeded,
Pablo Andujar.
