Alex Avila homers twice as Detroit Tigers beat Tampa Bay Rays second-straight time - MLB Update
Alex Avila’s second home run of the game took the Detroit Tigers to 7-6 win over the Tampa Bay Rays in second-straight outing of the three-game series, at the Comerica Park, Michigan, on Tuesday night, May 24.
The Tigers were under a 6-5 deficit in the bottom of the eighth inning when Avila landed the field and blistered a striking two-run homer off the Rays’ reliever Joel Peralta. Avila has also launched a one-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Tigers have achieved an early lead in the second inning with a RBI single touched by Austin Jackson off the Rays’ starter Wade Davis. However, the Rays’ John Jaso tied the game in the top of the third inning touching an RBI single off the Tigers’ starter
Justin Verlander.
Martin Joyce then launched a two-run homer off Verlander in the fourth inning to make the Rays’ position strong over the game putting 3-1 on the board.
"It wasn't a great night for me," Verlander said despite scattering six earned runs. "It was a great night for the ball club. I couldn't be more happy."
The game kept on stumbling on either side throughout the game. In the fifth inning, Miguel Cabrera hammered a splendid three-run homer off Davis to take the Tigers back into leading position 4-3. However, in the top of the next inning, the Rays’ Bossman
Junior Upton touched an RBI single to tie the game 4-all, followed by an RBI lead generating double by Casey Kotchman to secure a 6-4 lead.
Then Avila came into action with his first homer to cut the lead by one run. On the other hand, the Tigers’ replaced Verlander with reliever Daniel Schlereth. Verlander has given six runs on nine hits without any walk over six innings.
However, Schlereth, Al Alburquerque and closer Joaquin Benoit all three remained scoreless in later part of the game to secure the Tigers’ 25th triumph of the season.
Davis, on the other hand lost his game despite restricting the Tigers to just one run in his first four innings. Overall, he allowed five runs on eight hits, walked two and struck four batters over six innings. Peralta, who allowed Avila his first homer,
threw one innings, walked two and struck out two to hold his eighth game of the season.
Reliever Cesar Ramos tossed just three pitches and allowed a defeat-earning homer before relieved by Kyle Farnsworth, who three one strike of three pitches in last inning.
