Alex Bogdanovic downs Mark Verryth in qualifier final – Hall of Fame Championships 2011
British Alex Bogdanovic, ranked 403rd in the world, prevailed over world number 593 Mark Verryth of Australia in straight sets 6-4, 7-5 in the final round of the qualifying draw at the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis
Championships in Newport on Monday. It took the Brit an hour and 26 minutes to beat his opponent in an evenly contested match and qualify for the main draw.
Bogdanovic and Verryth held their serve in the first four games of the opening set and squared off the score at 2-2. The British broke his opponent in the fifth game and consolidated on it to take a 4-2 lead. Bogdanovic served
out the set in the tenth game, sealing it 6-4.
The British delivered 64 percent of the first serves and one ace in the opening set. Bogdanovic converted 76 percent of the first serves and 67 percent of the second serves into points in the first set. In comparison, Verryth served
quite well as the Australian fired six aces and captured 78 percent of the first serves in the opening set. The 20-year-old converted 24 percent of the first returns into points in comparison to 22 percent by his opponent. Verryth failed in capitalising on
any of the three break point opportunities he created on the Brit’s serve and could not save one of the three break points on his own serve in the first set.
In the second set, Bogdanovic and the Australian failed to break each other in the first ten games to equalise the score at 5-5. The British finally broke ice as he got the breakthrough in the eleventh game and captured the set
7-5.
Bogdanovic fired two aces but also committed four double faults in the second set. The British kept his first serve percentage at 67 percent and captured a whopping 88 percent of the first service points in the second set. On the
other hand, Verryth smacked five aces and 58 percent of the first serves, sealing 83 percent of the points on them in the second set. Bogdanovic converted one of the three break points he received on Verryth’s serve and amazingly succeeded in saving all the
four break points he faced on his own serve in the second set.
The German had defeated world number 688 Devin Britton of USA in three sets 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 in the second round qualifier.
Bogdanovic is drawn to meet eighth seed Tobias Kamke of Germany in the first round of the main draw.
