Alex Bogomolov Jr. downs Ruben Bemelmans to move into quarterfinal – Hall of Fame Championships 2011
Seeded at number five in the tournament, Alex Bogomolov of the United States, continued his voyage at the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships by defeating Ruben Bemelmans of Germany in the second round clash on Wednesday.
The contest was staged at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island, United States, with Bogomolov exhibiting some quality tennis in front of his home crowd to make it into the quarter-finals of the ATP (Association
of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 event.
The German competitor hung in the contest for just one hour and thirteen minutes before surrendering to the belligerent American at 6-2, 0-6, 1-6, to end his voyage at the tournament. Bemelmans had an excellent beginning to the
match, taking the opening set in merely 20 minutes of play but then was caught up in a drastic slump, throwing away the following two sets without any real fight in the competition.
The fifth seed American was off to a sloppy start to the game, dropping serve in his very first game to let the Bemelmans take a 2-0 lead. Bogomolov appeared rusty in the initial parts of the contest and failed to pose any serious
resistance to the aggressive start of the German competitor. Bemelmans stung his second serve break of the day two games later and then reeled of 11 out of 13 first serve points to reach set point at 5-2. The German got one up early in the matchup by bagging
the first set at 6-2 and it looked as if he is well on course to a comprehensive straight sets victory.
Tide turned in the very next set, with Bogomolov launching a series of attacking moves on his opponent to transfer the pressure upon him. The American served with commanding precision, reaching 78 per cent accuracy and secured
30 out of 46 total points being played in the second set. He broke Bemelmans in his every single serve game and stung three consecutive break points to stun him with a 6-0 set win.
The American dominance continued with its full flow in the final set of the contest as well, with brilliant error-free tennis from Bogomolov. He cracked in two more serve breaks to conclude victory at 6-1 on the most authoritative
note and moved into the quarter-final draws of the Campbell’s hall of Fame Tennis Championships.
Bogomolov will now compete in the all-American affair against the top seed John Isner for a place in the semis on Thursday.
