World number 57 Alex Bogomolov Jr. of USA knocked out Frenchman Adrian Mannarino, ranked 54th in the world, in straight sets 6-2, 7-6(4) in the first round at the Rogers Cup in Montreal on Monday. The American took an
hour and 21 minutes to claim victory.
Bogomolov Jr. and the French won their serve in the first five games of the opening set to take the score to 3-2 in favour of the former. The American captured three straight games after that, breaking Mannarino in the sixth and
eighth game to win the set 6-2.
The Miami, Florida resident fully utilised his huge serves as he smacked three aces and 72 percent of the first serves, claiming an amazing twelve of the thirteen first service points in the first set. The five feet and ten inches
tall also claimed four of the five second service points. While, Mannarino kept his first serve percentage at 62 percent and hit one ace. The French converted thirteen of the 21 first serves and four of the thirteen second serves into points in the opening
set. The Soizy resident returned poorly, bagging only one of the thirteen points on the first return compared to eight out of 21 by his opponent in the first set.
In the second set, Bogomolov Jr. and Mannarino showed a great serving display, holding all their serves to level the score at 6-6 and force a tie-break. The American, however, needed a single mini-break in the tie-break, capitalising
on it to win 7-4.
The right-handed bulldozed his opponent with the serve, firing five aces and 75 percent of the first deliveries. The American captured an incredible 24 of the 27 first service points in the second set. The 28-year-old converted
five of the nine second serves into points and saved the one break point he faced in the second set.
Bogomolov Jr. is participating in Rogers Cup for the third time. He improved to a 2-2 win/loss record here. The American made his debut at Rogers Cup in 2004, losing to the then world number 4 Carlos Moya in straight sets 4-6,
3-6 in the round of 32. Bogomolov Jr. defeated Josselin Ouanna of France in the final qualifier to advance to the main draw in 2006. However, he could not win any match in the main draw, losing to Spaniard Tommy Robredo 4-6, 2-6 in the first round.
The American is drawn to meet fifth seed Gael Monfils of France in the second round.
