Alex Bogomolov Jr. ousts Greg Jones to sit in the 2nd round – Farmers Classic 2011
As the 1st round matches continued, the Farmers Classic 2011 became more and more intense. Greg Jones, the Aussie, played his 1st rounder against Alex Bogomolov Jr. of USA. The match started off at 22:00 hours,
local time. Taking a little over ninety minutes, the American bounced back from a set down to secure a 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 win over the Aussie.
Having played each other twice before, the LA Tennis Centre one again brought the two in front of each other to battle it out for a spot in the second round.
In their prior meetings Alex Jr. Bogomolov has been the dominant factor both the times. The Russian born American has been playing most of his game on Hard and Grass circuits. At 28-years of age, Alex is currently ranked 64th
in the world. The right hander has a vicious playing attitude.
On the contrary, ranked at world No.222, Greg Jones plays as more of a baseliner but that did not help him out much. The former world No.179 has a weak backhand and is not so impressive in playing cut shots. During the match the
Australian did scare the world No.64 in the beginning of the match but a simple scare did not win him the match.
The match started off slowly for the American as he served first and gave away the first breakpoint of the match. The 22-year-old Aussie took away the second set to roll the score card to 2-0. He then mastered the next two games
and increased his lead to 4-0. However, Alex did pull back but could not really get to the end. Jones finally won the set 6-4 and led the game by 1 set to 0.
Serving for the second set opener, Alex did not make any mistakes and opened up the scoreboard 1-0. Shaking up the Aussie with his powerful forehands, the 28-year-old revenged his 1st set beating and took the next two
game leading 3-0 in the set. The Aussie did pull back the next game but unfortunately that was the only game he could win. Alex thrashed the set with a 5 games margin winning 6-1 over the Jones.
With scores now level at 1-1, the decider was undoubtedly going to be a set worth the watch. Greg Jones served first in the decider but got ran over by the American and lost a breakpoint 1-0. The American then mustered the next
three sets killing the Aussie’s dreams. The world No.64 once again gave the same beating of the second set and finished of the match 4-6, 6-1, 6-1.
The former Russian made it look like a piece of cake. Nevertheless, the Aussie would certainly look for another chance to settle the scores with the American who now sits in the 2nd round of the Farmers Classic.
