Alex Bogomolov “Russia can upset Brazil in the Davis Cup tie” – Tennis News
Russia will go head-to-head in the most critical tie of the Davis Cup against the talented Brazilian side and they look to win the battle having being labelled as the ‘big underdogs’ as per the comment of the team lead of Russia,
Alex Bogomolov. He was talking to the media representatives of Brazilian news website Globo and added, “We are here as big underdogs.”
If the Brazilian team is able to beat the Russian squad at the clay courts at home then the two-time champion will not be amongst the esteemed level of play for the first time in the history of the Davis Cup. World number 41, Thomaz
Bellucci, will be marshalling his troops in the battle field against the Russian versatile squad that have a huge ability to register an upset against them. However, the advantage of clay courts, familiar arenas and home support will be a massive for the Brazilians
but there is still a possibility of a surprising result.
World number 90, Bogomolov, is expected to lead the Russian side in the singles category and he will be assisted by the likes of the 96th ranked compatriot, Igor Andreev, who has recently faced a severe dip in the form
so the hopes solely rest on the performance of the team leader at the moment.
Bogomolov himself confessed that the Brazilian squad is very tough to beat. He commented, “The Brazilian team is very strong, starting with the doubles, and also in the singles with Bellucci. The surface is their preferred clay.
We are underdogs and we feel very good in that position.”
Another problem for the Russian squad is that they only have Bogomolov amongst the Top-100 players in the doubles category where as Brazilian team have four different players ranked in that range. So, the chance of any positive
result in the final doubles match is also hanging in favour of the Brazilian squad. Hence, the major issue of falling out of elite category looks most probable at the moment.
Other two players that will take part in the tie from the Russian side include the 163rd ranked Teymuraz Gabashvili and world number 465, Stanislav Vovk. Unfortunately, the number one and two Russian players, Mikhail
Youzhny and Nikolay Davydenko, will miss out on the tie against Brazil for undisclosed reasons while other players are allowed to concentrate on their singles game to improve the ranking.
Brazil’s team will feature world number 115, Rogerio Dutra Silva, and their doubles team of Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares.
