Alex Bogomolov blows away Dusan Lajovic in the quarter-finals – St. Petersburg Open 2011
Seeded at number seven in the tournament, America’s Alex Bogomolov ravaged the Serb qualifier, Dusan Lajovic, in the quarter-final rounds of the St. Petersburg Open on Friday evening.
36th ranked Bogomolov faced no real challenge from the bleak Serbian opponent, outplaying him in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, to advance in to the semi-final round of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour
250 tournament.
Lajovic proved a total mismatch for the American competitor and was completely blown away by his aggressive game play in straight sets. Bogomolov clinched 12 of the total 15 games being played in the matchup to book a berth in
his second ATP World Tour semi-final of the running season. It was his second consecutive victory over the Serbian in two week’s time, as the American ousted Lajovic in the opening round of the Kremlin Cup in Moscow last week as well.
28-year-old Bogomolov excelled every segment of the game to outclass his opponent in the most authoritative manner. He secured 26 out of his 36 first serve points in the game and broke the Serbian serve five out of 15 times to
come out as the winner. The American faced three break points from Lajovic but denied the Serb every single time to keep his supremacy over the contest.
The crowd at the Petersburg Sports and Concert Complex witnessed a brilliant display of sheer dominance from the seventh seeded American. Bogomolov took the reins of the contest right from the beginning and never lost control of
it at any point. He registered his first serve break of the match in the third game to lead 3-1 early in the set and then continued with his assault to nail another crucial break point in the seventh game to reach 5-2. Bogomolov served out of the opening set
at 6-2 to get one up in the contest and continued to press his opponent to submit in the following set.
The American took off the second set with a crushing serve break to lead 2-0 and then stung two more breaks of serve in the fifth and seventh game to wrap up victory at 6-1.
Up next for Bogomolov in the semi-final draw if the second seeded Serbian, Janko Tipsarevic, who outplayed Potito Starace of Italy in the round of eight to book a battle with the American. Tipsarevic will be facing Bogomolov after
seven years and will be fighting for his second consecutive World Tour final in Saint Petersburg.
